What Reiki Is — and What It Isn’t
What to expect from your session
Reiki is one of those words that means everything to some people and nothing to others. Before your first session, it helps to set the record straight — gently, honestly, and without the mystique.
Reiki is…
- ✦A gentle, non-invasive energy practice rooted in Japanese tradition
- ✦A deeply relaxing experience for the body and mind
- ✦A complement to conventional medical care
- ✦Offered fully clothed, with light or no physical touch
- ✦Guided by the principle of supporting your body's natural capacity to rest and heal
- ✦A personal, often quietly profound experience
Reiki isn’t…
- ✕A medical treatment or a substitute for professional healthcare
- ✕A religious practice — it has no doctrine or belief requirements
- ✕Massage — there is no manipulation of muscles or tissue
- ✕Something you have to "believe in" for it to work
- ✕Dramatic or overwhelming — most people simply feel very, very calm
- ✕A one-size-fits-all experience — each session is different
What to expect when you arrive
You’ll be welcomed into a calm, quiet space. There’s nothing you need to do or prepare — just arrive as you are. Your practitioner will take a few minutes to talk through how you’re feeling and answer any questions before you begin.
You’ll lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table, usually with soft music or silence. Your practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above areas of the body, working gently from head to feet. Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes.
What you might feel during a session
- ✦A deep sense of relaxation — many people fall into a light sleep
- ✦Warmth, tingling, or gentle pulsing sensations where hands are placed
- ✦A quiet mind — thoughts slow down and the mental chatter softens
- ✦Emotional release — tears, laughter, or a sense of relief can all arise naturally
- ✦Occasionally — nothing in particular. That's just as valid.
- ✦After the session: a feeling of lightness, clarity, or simply being more yourself
What to Expect in Your Session
Sessions begin with a short intake conversation about your current needs and intentions. You will remain fully clothed and rest comfortably on a massage table. I will gently place my hands on or just above various areas of your body, following the traditional Reiki hand positions.
Sessions are typically 60 minutes but can be longer as needed. Afterward, many clients report feeling deeply relaxed, grounded, or emotionally lighter.
Self-Care After your Reiki session
Give yourself a little time before rushing back into your day. Drink plenty of water, rest if you can, and notice how you feel in the hours and days that follow. Some people notice shifts immediately; for others, the benefits unfold more gradually over time.
There are no side effects, only the possibility of feeling more rested, more at ease, and more connected to yourself.
“You don’t need to understand Reiki for it to meet you where you are. You only need to show up.”
